FCC Construcción y Convensa has won the contract to carry out the works to adapt the Roda de Berà tunnel (Tarragona) to the international gauge. This action, whose amount exceeds 16 million euros, is considered key to boosting freight traffic by rail and increasing operational flexibility in this strategic axis of the Mediterranean Corridor.

The project contemplates the expansion of the tunnel to adapt it to the international or standard gauge, which will allow the circulation of freight trains with speeds of up to 120 km/h. To this end, the dimensions of the tunnel section (422 meters in length) will be increased, by lowering the grade to one meter, to comply with interoperability standards, as in other tunnels that are part of the Mediterranean Corridor route in Catalonia, such as those of Martorell or Castellbisbal. A third rail will also be installed on both tracks, which will facilitate the circulation of trains of different gauges, improving interoperability and connectivity in the region.
