FCC Construcción Portugal and Convensa have completed the new Metrobus routes to Coimbra-B and Praça da República, a historic milestone for transport in the central region. The launch of the new Metrobus routes to Coimbra-B and Praça da República represents another decisive step forward in the development of the Mondego Transport System, one of the most significant sustainable transport projects undertaken in Portugal in recent decades. The official opening took place recently in the presence of representatives from the Government, Metro Mondego and local authorities, marking a new chapter in transport in the Coimbra region.

This project strengthens the link between the city’s central railway station, the city centre and some of the areas with the highest demand for transport, contributing to a more efficient, integrated and sustainable public transport network. The expansion of the system also represents an important step in the transformation of transport in the Coimbra region, by encouraging greater use of public transport and reducing reliance on private vehicles.

FCC Construcción Portugal and Convensa have carried out the construction of this strategic infrastructure, helping to bring to life a modern and innovative transport solution geared towards the future needs of the population.

A flagship project for Coimbra

The ‘Coimbra-B and Mondego Mobility System (Coimbra-B / Portagem)’, carried out by FCC Construcción Portugal and Convensa, involved the refurbishment of the railway station, the construction of the infrastructure associated with the Metrobus line — which runs for 1.8 km through an urban environment — and the redevelopment of the surrounding areas.

This project was structured around three main areas of intervention, covering railway, urban and sustainable mobility infrastructure, which contributed to the modernisation of a major gateway to the city of Coimbra and the integration of the new Metrobus system into the urban fabric.

The Mondego Mobility System represents a profound transformation of regional mobility, integrating the redevelopment of the former Lousã Line railway corridor with the implementation of a high-capacity transport solution, designed to address the challenges of the energy transition, decarbonisation and urban sustainability. Beyond its operational aspects, the project has led to significant urban regeneration and the creation of improved conditions in terms of accessibility, safety and comfort for users, contributing to better integration between different modes of transport and the revitalisation of public spaces.

The launch of the new connections to Coimbra-B and Praça da República strengthens the city’s connectivity and brings citizens closer to a modern, efficient and more environmentally sustainable transport network, consolidating the Mondego Mobility System as a national benchmark in the public transport sector.

This significant milestone is also the result of the commitment, dedication and professionalism of the technical, operational and management teams who have been involved throughout the various phases of the project. The success of this initiative reflects the capacity for collaboration, innovation and excellence that has enabled the delivery of infrastructure with a significant social, urban and regional impact.
