FCC Construcción Portugal and Convensa have completed the excavation of the tunnel connecting the Casa da Música and Campo Alegre stations on the Rubi Line of the Porto Metro (Portugal).

The connection of the underground route between these two strategic stations represents one of the project’s most significant technical challenges. Carrying out the works has required meticulous engineering planning to overcome the complex geology of the urban terrain and minimise any impact on the surface.

With the completion of this excavation, work will now focus on the tunnel structure, the laying of the track superstructure and the installation of the necessary signalling and electrification systems.

The Rubi Line will have a total length of 6.3 kilometres, connecting the central Casa da Música station in Porto with Santo Ovídio in Vila Nova de Gaia. The project includes the construction of a new bridge over the River Douro, the Ponte Ferreirinha, reserved exclusively for the metro, pedestrians and cyclists, and stands as one of the largest investments in public transport and green infrastructure in northern Portugal.

The Rubi Line (Line H) of the Porto Metro is currently one of the most ambitious urban infrastructure projects in Portugal. Designed to transform metropolitan mobility, it will connect the municipalities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, taking a massive volume of road traffic off the roads between the two banks of the River Douro. It is estimated that it will serve more than 12 million passengers a year, reducing CO₂ emissions by thousands of tonnes by eliminating journeys made by private car.

With this achievement, FCC Construcción and Convensa reaffirm their technical capability and their commitment to the development of key infrastructure for sustainable urban mobility in Portugal.
