FCC Construcción Portugal and Convensa win contract to modernise the Leixões line
FCC Construcción Portugal and Convensa have been awarded the contract to renovate the Leixões railway line. The renovation and modernisation of the Leixões railway line, promoted by Infraestructuras de Portugal, includes a series of works aimed at improving railway operations, safety and the sustainability of the infrastructure, such as: remodelling the set of entry and exit tracks at the Leixões terminal; adapting the reserve tracks—which allow for temporary parking and train crossings—at the Contumil and São Mamede de Infesta stations, ensuring conditions for the operation of trains up to 750 metres in length; improving the catenary along the entire length of the Leixões line; remodelling three existing telecommunications equipment rooms and constructing a new technical building in Leixões; installing five new GSM-R telecommunications towers.
Also noteworthy are the works to reinforce the safety of local accesses and crossings on the Leixões line, with the removal of four level crossings and two pedestrian crossings.
In addition, there are plans to build an underpass for vehicles in São Gemil; the construction of a pedestrian overpass, which will allow the removal of the existing pedestrian level crossing at this location; the construction of a pedestrian overpass, the improvement of the ramp and the track parallel to the São Mamede de Infesta station; and the removal of the level crossing and crossing area at this location.
These interventions are particularly important for improving rail and road safety, enhancing the mobility of the population and the efficiency of logistics operations associated with the port of Leixões, and cover the municipalities of Porto, Gondomar, Maia and Matosinhos. This investment reinforces the role of rail as a sustainable transport alternative, boosts the efficiency of goods entering and leaving the port of Leixões, and contributes to the country's economic and social development.
FCC Construcción, with more than 125 years of experience in railway projects, continues to contribute to the development of infrastructure that improves the quality of life of the Portuguese people.
