Convensa, through the ‘High-speed railway platform, Murcia-Almería section’ project, has won the award for Best Public Works in Andalusia for the Andalusia, Ceuta and Melilla region from the College of Civil Engineers (CICCP). The aim of these awards is to recognise excellence in the design and execution of key infrastructure for economic development, sustainability and social welfare, as well as the contribution of people who promote and defend the role of engineering in society.

Convensa, a company specialising in railway works within the FCC Group, is carrying out the contract for the construction of the platform for the Murcia-Almería High-Speed Mediterranean Corridor, Níjar-Río Andara section, in the province of Almería. The Níjar-Río Andarax platform construction project is 25.5 kilometres long and consists of a single track. The section runs between the towns of Nijar and Almería and includes earthworks, 16 viaducts totalling more than 5,000 linear metres, an 880-metre-long tunnel to be built using the Belgian method, 56 drainage works, 9 underpasses and 4 overpasses, with their corresponding railway installations, and the final closure of the section.

This project is a key infrastructure for connecting the province's production centres - fruit and vegetable supply and mining - with a distribution line that will boost economic and social growth in the area.

Convensa is currently participating in several railway projects belonging to the Mediterranean Corridor. In addition to the Nijar-Rio Andarax section mentioned above, it is also working on the Totana-Lorca section. The latter is 7.5 kilometres long and includes a new double-track platform with a 2,160-metre viaduct, an overpass, 24 drainage works, the construction of the Lorca-San Diego station and the expansion of the Hoya de Lorca station.

Finally, it is developing a third section of the Mediterranean railway corridor platform in Totana (Murcia).

The FCC Group has built the Alhama-Totana section and the Sorbas-Barranco de los Gafarillos tunnel section of the Murcia-Almería high-speed line. The construction area has built more than 350 kilometres of high-speed rail, representing more than 30% of high-speed rail development in Spain, which is the second most important network in the world, behind China.

These projects will give new impetus to the Mediterranean Corridor, with actions that will promote and advance the construction of this strategic infrastructure. The new high-speed line is part of the Mediterranean Corridor, a critical infrastructure for the region and the country, in line with the European recovery strategy that has directed its resources to projects that will boost the green and digital economy and contribute to the development of the industrial and productive fabric of the regions.

These three sections under construction make Convensa a key player in the development of the Mediterranean Corridor.
